What are Categories in Lumio? And how do you change a transaction category?

What are Categories?

Categories allow you to label any transaction with a category that makes sense to you and your partner. Different categories sit under 3 types of categories:

  • Spending - everyday shopping, holidays, travel, saving transfers, vet bills...

  • Income - Salaries, interest and any extra income

  • Bills

Spending includes:

Business, Cash, Charity, Childcare, Clothing, Credit Card, Eating Out, Education, Entertainment, General, Groceries, Health, Household, Investments, Loans, Mortgage, Pension, Pets, Rent, Savings, Tax, Transfers, Transport, Travel.

Income includes:

Salary, interest, Pension, Investments, Savings, or any other income.

Bills include:

Utilities, Phone, Broadband, TV, Insurance, and any other bills.

You can also create your own custom categories to give you and your partner more unique, custom options to categorise your transactions. Learn more here about creating a custom category.

Change transaction categories

  1. Go to Space you want to change the category in - by tapping on the profile icon in the top left of the screen.

  2. In the Home tab, scroll down to 'Recent Transactions' and select 'See all'.

  3. You'll see a list of 'My Transactions' - this contains a list of all the transactions of the accounts connected to the space.

  4. Tap the transaction you want to create a custom category for.

  5. On the Transaction Details screen, tap on the existing Category e.g. Groceries.

  6. On the Select Category screen, tap the category you want the transaction to relate to.

  7. Hit 'Save' in the top right corner of the screen. That's it.

Learning previous edits


Lumio is able to learn from your past edits. If you make three or more changes to a similar transaction, the app will be able to remember your previous edits and adapt future transactions.

Creating a custom category

  1. Go to Space you want to create the custom category in - by tapping on the profile icon in the top left of the screen.

  2. In the Home tab, scroll down to 'Recent Transactions' and select 'See all'.

  3. You'll see a list of 'My Transactions' - this contains a list of all the transactions of the accounts connected to the space.

  4. Tap the transaction you want to create a custom category for.

  5. On the Transaction Details screen, tap on the existing Category e.g. Groceries.

  6. On the Select Category screen, tap '+ Add New Category' button at the bottom.

  7. In the Custom Category screen, confirm if it is Income or Spending at the top.

  8. Give your new category:

    1. A name

    2. A colour

    3. Even an icon/emoji by tapping the pencil icon.

  9. You then have the option to Add to Bill at the bottom of the screen.

  10. Finally, select 'Create Custom Category'.
